Families CAN, a project funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is an early years, home based literacy program aimed at empowering parents as their child’s first and best teachers. It works with families in their homes to provide them with the tools and information they need to give their children their best possible start in life. The name Families CAN refers to the regions (Canada, Akwesasne & New York) in which the project was started. Families CAN uses the curriculum “Parents as Teachers” or PAT. “Parents as Teachers” is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually age 5. Personal in home visits are the main service delivery model. During these visits, “Parent Educators” share age-appropriate child development information with parents, help them learn to observe their own child, address their parenting concerns, and engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent/child interaction. The project grew as it received more funding over the years. In 2007, Tri-County Literacy Council became the lead agency for the Families CAN project and late in the fall of that year the project received 3 year funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This funding will allow additional agencies in the area to train their staff in the PAT Born to Learn curriculum.
